Gracious and strong, this bronze sculpture of a Sumbawa pony is finely detailed with leafy openwork. Sumbawa is an Indonesian island whose major claim to fame are its ponies, believed to descend from Mongolian horses. Measuring at the most 13 hands high, the Sumbawa pony is agile and good natured, and still used for pack, riding and light draft work. Sumbawa ponies are ridden by men during lance-throwing games, and by boys in traditional dance competitions. Elayanti presents this antiqued sculpture suspended from an iron stand with an albesia wood base.
