Frida and Diego Together! I Love Practical Art!
My grandmother used to call this size and shape of box a "glove box," and it would be perfect for that purpose if women still wore gloves on a daily basis. It is roomy with a thick piece of mirror which nearly covers the whole inside lid. The central section of Rivera's well-known mural is repeated on all four sides and a beautifully balanced collection of Frida Kahlo's self-portraits cover the box lid. As always with Ana Maria Gonzalez, the design is graceful and well thought out, the craftmanship is perfect. This particular box has gently curved corners and curved lid which add interest and style. I keep this box on my living room coffee table to contain the odd small bits and pieces which would otherwise go astray, notes to self, a pen, car keys, a pair of earrings, etc. Although the artwork is colorful, everything is overlaid with a golden wash, maybe part of the decoupage process. The beveled edges of the box lid are a deep, burnished, antiqued gold. Very sophisticated and pretty.
