Wonderful for teaching
the mask has a dynamic presence in my home. I love the bright color as well as a symbol of two diamonds for lessons to be taught.
I have an extensive collection of African masks but not one with this shape. The color is not orangy orange but is as pictured. I needed to add color to my collection.
Another Beautiful Mask by Jose Canil Ramos
This mask is absolutely gorgeous. It is my new favorite mask. (The photograph doesn?t do it justice. The mask is a much lighter orange than what is shown). I now have a collection of six of the artist?s masks and I love them all.
Popular Orange Masks
Orange and Black Hand Carved Sese Wood Adesewa Mask, "Orange Adesewa"$69.99
"Crowned beauty," proclaims the name of this mask, from the Yoruba language. The face is painted in orange and black and crowned with a black headpiece, all carved from local sese wood by Ghanaian artisan Abdul Aziz Mohamadu. The rounded diamond shape highlights the pointed chin and high forehead, used in many kinds of African masks as a representation of idealized beauty.
Hand Crafted African Wood Mask with Beads and Brass Accents, "Beaded Warrior"$69.99
Sese wood, metal accents, and a beaded symbol are expertly combined by Ghanian artisan Awudu Saaed to create this vibrant warrior mask. The double diamond design is called and represents handcuffs, a symbol of slavery that West African chiefs have reclaimed as a symbol of law and justice. Working to support his mother and siblings, Awudu learned his craft at an early age and continues the tradition, now training apprentices of his own.
Handcrafted Wood Animal Mask Wall Sculpture, "Orange Maya Deer"$94.99
"The stories that my grandfather used to tell me inspired me to create this sculpture," explains Guatemalan carver Jose Canil Ramos. "To the Maya people, the deer is the most intelligent creature of all, and represents the purity of the forests." Canil carves the mask by hand from pinewood and paints it with extraordinary artistry. Before finishing the piece, he applies a mixture of soot and water to achieve an antique and weathered illusion. The ears and antlers are disassembled for shipping.
Colorful Wood Mask with Recycled Glass Beads, "Yaka Initiation"$107.99
This fascinating mask is the original design of Ghana's Christopher Nyasafo, who take his inspiration from the Yaka peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mask is hand carved from sese wood and painted in dark brown and orange. The artisan adds a jute topknot and recycled glass beads.
