“Hello! I am Sofia Beber from Guatemala. I am passionate, intuitive and persevering. I was born in 1994. Since I was little I characterized myself as an artist. My family tells me that I drew with great detail from an early age, and even some paintings have been preserved from those times. I grew up in Guatemala City with my parents, my sister, and my maternal grandmother. Each one with different humanistic professions, but it was only me who was interested in the world of art and design.
“During my college period, I noticed that my favorite class was arts, a space where I could excel and enjoy every experience with materials. It was then that I decided to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design. I consider this step the most important, since it helped me define and understand where I wanted to go. Finishing those years of college, I decided that I needed a career where I could experiment with my creativity and materials, and that's where the Bachelor of Industrial Design stole my heart. I spent almost 5 years designing products with different materials and processes, especially the methods of Guatemalan crafts. Thanks to my career in industrial design, I got to know artisan jewelry. For the last year of my degree, it was necessary to develop a degree project (thesis) that would benefit the consumers or users. I decided to develop a tool to support the setting process for artisan jewelers. Researching each point of manufacture on jewelry helped me realize that I wanted to delve into that topic as a life project. It was at this time that I met a couple of artists/craftsmen with spectacular techniques and quality. They were the pillar of my project. The knowledge I acquired was thanks to Rafael, an artisan from Antigua Guatemala, who supported me with my thesis project. With his patience and his love for what he does, he managed to transmit that same feeling towards jewelry to me.
“My business started at the end of December 2018, designing bags for women with unconventional materials. It was in the middle of 2019 where I started to develop my first jewelry designs. Currently I dedicate myself 100% to my brand and to developing different designs inspired by nature and its exotic forms. The most beautiful part is creating the concept of inspiration for the new collections. I use 925 sterling silver. As for my procedure as a designer, I could define it this way: I identify the source of inspiration, develop different sketches on the ideas to be executed, and carry out tests in the workshop where thickness, size and material are defined. I am inspired by the irregular shapes of nature, exotic plants, fruits or vegetables. Every organic form that I can see outside is what inspires me. My art is reflected through jewelry techniques acquired from generation to generation for artisans.
“Establishing myself as an artisan has not been easy, but it has not been impossible either. The love that we give to the brand day after day motivates us to continue carrying out this project. Little by little we have grown in Guatemala, and we can be sure that we have positioned ourselves very well in the industry. I would like to tell you that the designs you decide to purchase not only benefit my dream as a designer, but also help to continue creating employment for the artisans who support me in manufacturing. You can be sure that the quality is exquisite and full of tradition.”
