The city of Ayacucho, Peru, is still referred to by its ancient name, Huamanga, and the alabaster from this region is called Huamanga stone. Using this material, Carlos Galvez has hand carved the components of this nativity scene and then assembled together the tiny figurines of Joseph, Mary, the Baby Jesus, an angel and two domesticated animals inside their stone lodgings. Huamanga stone is typically white, but its tonalities can range from gray to sepia as is the case here where the sculpture exhibits a lovely marbled pinkish hue.
Please note: The figures within the nativity are fixed in place and cannot be removed.
