Feriberto Aylas crafts an intriguing ceramic mask adorned with reminiscences of the Huari culture. Striving to conserve traditional techniques while improving and experimenting with consistency and color tones, he masterfully depicts Andean life in the majority of his work. Aylas believes that by doing so he is expressing the very "soul of Peru." This mask is sculpted with clay native to the Andes region and then carefully painted with engobes (colored liquid clay). Once the mask is removed from the kiln, it is decorated with natural oxides applied with delicate brushstrokes. In the final step of the process, the mask is bathed in shellac to protect and conserve the warm, earthy paint tones.
When ordering a ceramic piece such as this one, the product received will be unique. Not even the artisan can recreate it. As this is a handmade product, occasionally there may be small color inconsistencies, porosity, or asymmetrical brushstrokes. However, this only enhances and confirms the originality and authenticity of this piece.
