Rich colors and ornamentation characterize the Shwelemor mask of the Ga people from Ghana. Meaning "Prosperity," the Shwelemor is worn to invoke the spirit of success. Robert Nortey carves the sese wood mask by hand, then he decorates it with bright acrylic paints and embossed brass plates.
Robert Nortey has received 7 microcredit loans with 0% interest from Kiva and Novica, the first for $500 and the most recent for $350. Proceeds were used to invest in the raw materials he uses for his authentic African masks.
