Dancers in colorful headdresses step to the sound of flutes and drums in an ancestral ritual. Above them, four intrepid dancers whirl slowly around a pole, head downward, each representing one of the four cardinal directions. The musician at the top of the pole symbolizes the center of the universe. Working in watercolors, Chapis Fregoso – a member of Mexico's Callinart Artists – explores Mexico's pre-Hispanic traditions in Papantla.
