Backgammon may be the world's oldest board game. Invented in Mesopotamia, there is evidence of it being played in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, Japan, and England. Over the millennia it evolved into today's simple but multilayered game of tiles and strategy. Made by a fourth-generation artist in Damascus, Syria, this game board is handcrafted using hundreds of tiny pieces--called tesserae--of inlaid walnut, olive, lemon, apricot, and rosewood. As each piece is handcrafted, exact colors and patterns of the inlay may vary. Can also play chess and checkers on the reverse of the folding case. Backgammon and checker pieces included.

"Stunning gameboard"

This is a lovely, even stunning game board. One suggestion: the clasp joining the top to the bottom is inadequate. I should want a clasp that keeps the two together.

"So disappointing!"

Uneven finishing. Some areas had no finish at all, on others it appeared gooped on. The hinges were poor quality (the clasp was a bit better. From a distance, it looked nice, but when you touched it, some areas felt somewhat smooth, others felt like bare wood. It went immediately back into the box and is being returned!

"Beautiful Gameboard, Gorgeous Workmanship"

When I bought one previously as a gift, it got such rave reviews that I'm buying another one as a gift, and maybe one for me, too. The handcrafted mosaic is beautifully designed and of excellent quality. Even the small playing pieces are little works of art! And it looks just as pretty whether sitting on a shelf closed for display or opened up for playing. As a bonus, it makes me feel good to help support the Syrian craftsmen who make the product. Not as inexpensive as some other similar products, but you get what you pay for - it's well worth the price.

"Poor Quality"

This item is very poor quality. The photo is deceiving. The workmanship is very poor. There are gaps n the inset woods and the finish is very rough and uneven. In addiition, one of the hinges made the box lid close unevenly. I was surprised for a NG product that they would sell something like this. Very disappointed and would not recommend.

"Beautiful Game Board!"

I have admired this Backgammon board for a few years, and received it this past Christmas. Pictures do not do it justice. It is stunning. I think that it would be a nice added touch if the die were hand made in a similar fashion. Also, I agree with the other review about the clasp - it will not hold, so I am very careful when I move it. Neither of these observations take away from the intricate mosaic woodwork. I love it!
