Legend tells how Saint Christopher sought to serve the greatest of all kings. Instructed in the Christian faith by a hermit, he began assisting travelers to cross a wide river. One day, a child needed to cross. As Christopher advanced with the child on his shoulders, his load became heavier and heavier, and the waters became deeper and swifter. Once safe on the other shore, the child told Christopher he had carried the weight of the entire world and He who made it. Realizing that this was the Christ child, Christopher became a Christian evangelist, and was eventually martyred in the city of Lycia.
Fernando Sayan Polo recreates an image from a colonial Cuzco church. The painting is a copy of a classic portrait, a theme he often repeats. But Sayan gives it his own interpretation.
