By Ixbalam Ke Women Weavers, this graceful cotton top is woven by hand on the backstrap loom. The short caftan showcases motifs in the traditional pic biltechnique. This involves laying in thicker threads where the patterns are desired, giving the textile the appearance of embroidery. The work is so laborious that such a top takes some two weeks to finish. Decorative thread work links each of the three pieces of fabric.
"Our inspiration comes from everything around us," the artisans confide. "When we go to the river, we catch crabs for dinner. We see the plants and leaves, and these all are translated into this design. The small dots represent kernels of corn."
