"My techniques are intuitive, so they are true to me because they are something I have created for myself. They are inborn."
"My name is Yusuf Seidu Okus, and I was born in Nigeria on November 10, 1973. I graduated from college in painting and general arts in 1994 and 1998, respectively. I practiced at various studios when I finished school until I was finally ready to establish my own art studio.
"The themes in my paintings normally dwell on natural scenes of life, life's vicissitudes and calamities. These issues have become of main concern in my world, and I express them through my canvases. They come from my subconscious and they are strongly related to my natural environment. Sometimes the urge to create is very strong and it transforms my canvas into something bold and extraordinary. The figures I use turn out to be abstract in every form because they evolve from my subconscious. On the other hand, I also love painting figures and women from the markets.
"My techniques are intuitive, so they are true to me because they are something I have created for myself. They are inborn. These techniques have evolved as a result of my quest to 'stand out in the crowd.' I use different textures to create different effects that add character and identity to my works. I use oils, acrylics and watercolors.
"I have exhibited my paintings at international art fairs including Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo and Ghana."
