"According to Akan traditions, the Osompa mask is usually given to a woman as recognition for her diligent work," explains master carver Daniel Nyadedzor. "Osompa means "good service" in Akan dialect, and it is given with some money too, when the woman leaves to get married." Nyadedzor carves the striking sese wood mask by hand and adorns its face with delicately embossed brass plates.
