"Each color I use comes from natural dyes and has a particular symbolism," explains Zapotec weaver Alberto Ruíz. "The colors are meant to replicate nature, so grays resemble cloudy days, green the Oaxaca hills in the summer time, and red reflects our sunsets." Ruíz weaves this wool rug on a traditional loom.
Because each rug is individually woven, measurements could vary +/- 2 inches (5 cm). Because color is obtained from natural dyes, tones may differ slightly.
I have become quite interested in pre hispanic MesoAmerica in the past few years and have been to Teotitlan de Valle, Alberto Ruiz's home town near Oaxaca. I found this item to be of excellent quality and to have several authentic design elements. I particularly like the "Greca" elements similar to those at Mitla. Plus - it looks great! Hope to find his shop his Feb when in Oaxaca.
